Every once in a blue moon, I get a rare Saturday with time to spare between shoots. This past weekend was one of those golden moments. After photographing a lovely engagement session along the iconic Chicago Riverwalk, I found myself with a few precious hours of freedom. So, what did I do? I frolicked around as a tourist in my own city it only makes sense to turn the camera on yourself post-session right?Consider it a self-love session-complete with awkward posing and dodging tourists like a pro.
First stop: coffee. Because caffeine is absolutely essential for a day like this. I cozied up at a Blue Bottle Coffee Shop overlooking the Chicago River, where the sun beamed through the windows, casting that perfect golden glow photographers obsess over. I sipped on my cozy winter latte - with a hint of pink peppercorn smooth with just the right amount of bod, soaking in the peaceful view — no camera in hand, just living the moment.
Then, as a self-proclaimed beachgoer (even in the dead of winter), I decided that 37 degrees was practically tropical. So naturally, I headed to one of my favorite beach spots. Boots on, I walked along the sandy shoreline, even as patches of ice sparkled underfoot. Lake Michigan really wanted to show off as the waves crashed rhythmically against the shore, and the sun shone down like a promise that spring would eventually return.
These little pockets of time are rare as a busy photographer and a mom juggling sports schedules and family life. But they are precious reminders to slow down, breathe, and just be.
So here’s my gentle nudge to you: when you find those free moments, take them. Frolicking around your city, sipping coffee in the sun, or walking along a winter beach might just be exactly what you need.
Until next time, stay curious and keep exploring.
